Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned the Lagos Land Archive as part of activities marking the maiden Geographic Information System (GIS) Day 2026.Sanwo-Olu commissioned the facility today Tuesday 7th October, 2026 during a guided inspection of the state’s geospatial infrastructure.

The Land Archive was designed as a central repository for the storage and preservation of hard-copy land documents. Construction of the facility began last year.

With its completion, Lagos now has what the state government described as the largest land information storage facility in West Africa, combining physical and electronic data storage systems.

During the inspection, the governor also toured various departments under the state’s e-GIS Office, where newly developed systems and technologies were demonstrated.

He visited the Physical Planning and Automation Department, Survey Information Centre, GIS Centre and the Office of the Surveyor-General.The demonstrations focused on the use of geospatial information for land administration, urban planning, infrastructure monitoring and decision-making.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos, given its scale and complexity, requires reliable geospatial information to effectively plan infrastructure and respond to the needs of its residents. The monumental event was preceeded by Sanwoolu appearing as the Special guest of honour at the Nigeria Innovation Summit (#NIS2026) at the MUSON Centre.

The Governor noted that land in Lagos is a highly valuable, finite resource. The new technology-driven system is designed to sanitise, secure, and enhance the transparent management of this asset, bringing absolute precision to the economic value of land across the metropolis.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the government can finally leverage real-time information to drive smarter urban planning, optimize infrastructure development, and scale up overall public service delivery for a city growing at Lagos’ rapid scale
