Every year on August 12, the world marks International Youth Day, a day dedicated to recognising the contributions of young people and drawing attention to the issues affecting them.

The theme, “Youth Today, Leaders of Tomorrow,” is one that always makes its way into discussion about youths. It highlights the important role young people are expected to play in shaping Nigeria’s future.

Yet the phrase invites harder questions than it answers: is that future being built today? Is there even a future for them?

Nigeria, as populous as a country it is has most of its population as youth. This points out to the fact that the youth should be a major concern for the country.

Yet, many questions are to be asked. Are young Nigerians actually receiving the tools, training and chances they need now or is “leaders of tomorrow” becoming a placeholder for opportunities perpetually deferred?

Do they stand a chance in actually making any impact in this “tomorrow” we all look forward to?

For many young Nigerians, this is a case of two sides of the same coin, a journey filled with both possibilities and challenges.

As young people continue to make their mark in entrepreneurship, technology, entertainment, sports, education and other sectors, many others struggle with unemployment, rising living costs, limited opportunities and uncertainty about the future. This reality, is it as a result of the condition of Nigeria today, or simply an emphasis of the difference in their lives?

What role does the country play in giving these youth a fair share in becoming the leaders of tomorrow?

As Nigeria marks International Youth Day, this special report by Eko Akete news speaks directly with young Nigerians to understand their experiences, aspirations and concerns. For the young people we spoke to, the phrase “leaders of tomorrow” carries different meanings.

While some see it as a call to take responsibility for Nigeria’s future, others believe the country must first create an environment where young people can thrive.

The difference in opinion is exactly what gives this report it’s due credence as it highlights the different realities of the youth in Nigeria.
