Oshodi undergoes clean up as sixty-one NYSC members tackle waste

The Army Arena Shopping Complex at Oshodi underwent a waste clean up by sixty-one National Youth Service Corps members, following the environmental campaign of the NAPTIP Community Development Service (CDS) group in Oshodi-Isolo Local Council of Lagos State based NYSC members, on Wednesday, 19th August.

The exercise which resulted in the evacuation of 17 bags of waste by the corp members formed a part of a community development project tagged “Operation Green Humanity – Clean Environment, Clean Community”. Traders were also sensitized on proper waste disposal.

The frontage of the railway and the interior of the market were the areas of focus during the clean-up as the corp members reported that the railway entrance was heavily littered, while the interior part of the market was tidy.

They called on the government to enact sanitation laws against dumping waste on the railway tracks as it could pose danger to the safety of lives. They also made an appeal to traders and buyers to put a stop to littering.

Meanwhile, the President of the NAPTIP CDS group, Mbaebie Esther, said that the motivation behind the project was over poor community sanitation concerns, adding that people are unaware of the dangers of poor waste management.

“A dirty environment causes disease and flooding. We urge the local government and community to see cleanliness as a shared responsibility and make it part of their everyday lifestyle,” she said.

The Oshodi-Isolo Local Council was called upon by the corp members to provide waste bins at the market entrance and constant environmental awareness for the adoption of proper waste disposal by the market users
