Alimosho residents accuse LAWMA, relevant authorities of abandoning refuse

The Lagos State government, Alimosho Local Government Council and a Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operator have been accused by the residents of Ikuomola Close, off Folarin Street, Alimosho, Lagos State of refusing collect refuse for four months.

The Ikuomola Landlord and Tenant Association, through its spokesperson, Christopher Araoye, in a letter addressed a letter to the Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Council, on July 31, said the council has failed to address the environmental crisis despite consistent complaints.

According to the residents, the Alimosho Local Government Council demanded N200,000 to intervene and evacuate the accumulated refuse, emphasizing that the environment is a serious threat to public health.

They claim that DANHIT FOCUS VENTURES, the assigned PSP operator by LAWMA, last serviced the street on April 17.“Today made it exactly 4 months that the Private Sector Participation (PSP) DANIHIT FOCUS VENTURES that the LAWMA assigned to our Close came to pack our refuse,” the residents said.

They also highlighted the health risks posed by the accumulated waste, adding that it has led to foul odours, mosquitoes and other rodents, making the neighborhood an easy target for diseases.

“Despite the allocation receiving directly from the federal government, they are still charging the residents of its local council before they can assist them to evacuate their refuse to prevent the community from the pandemic of cholera and other related diseases,” the residents said.

They also claim that the waste refuse had begun causing blockage to drainage channels, raising concerns about flooding.

The residents urged the council to intervene with LAWMA and other relevant authorities to hold the PSP operator accountable.
