Adeshina Makes History as First Nigerian Woman to Medal in Commonwealth High Jump

Nigeria’s Temitope Adeshina has made history by winning the bronze medal in the women’s high jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, ending the country’s 72-year wait for a medal in the event.

Adeshina, an alumna of Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Badagry, Lagos State, cleared 1.90 metres to secure the bronze medal.

The feat makes her the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s high jump and only the third Nigerian to claim a medal in the event.

According to information shared by the school community, Adeshina’s talent was discovered and nurtured by former principal and sports analyst, Mr. Akins Afolarin, who played a key role in her early development as an athlete.

It marks a striking turnaround for Adeshina, who placed 10th on her Commonwealth Games debut four years ago.

She credited the difference this time to having a coach in her corner, something she lacked at her previous Games appearance.
