A fully loaded trailer has overturned on Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on Wednesday 22nd , July, resulting in a truck driver sustaining severe injuries and causing traffic disruption in the area.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Tiger Response Team of the agency was deployed to the scene of the incident around 3:00 a.m. following a distress call.
The agency attributed the accident to overloading, based on preliminary investigation which indicated that the 40-foot bucket truck went out of control, crashing into the bridge’s rail and overturning while travelling along the bridge due to being overfilled with bags of flour.
The injured driver was rescued from the wreckage by emergency responders before being handed over to the Police who conveyed him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
It was confirmed by LASEMA that no one died in the accident, adding that operatives took on recovery operations immediately in order to clear the obstruction and restore the free flow of traffic on the median.
The recovery operation was a collaboration between operatives of LASEMA, LASTMA, the Nigeria Police Force as well as other emergency responders, who combined efforts to move the overturned truck with the assistance of two towing trucks. The operation also involved managing traffic around the accident scene.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA permanent secretary, commended the emergency responders for their swift intervention.
He urged road users to be cautious, avoid overloading and ensure their vehicles are safe for roads.
He advised members of the public to promptly report emergencies using the state’s toll-free emergency lines, 112 and 767.
