Lagos launches greenhouse gas registry to strengthen climate governance

The Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos State Greenhouse Gas Registry (LGHGR), becoming the first sub-national government in Nigeria to establish a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions registry.

The registry was unveiled on Monday as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability and improve climate governance.

Speaking at the launch, General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Babatunde Ajayi, said the registry would enable the state to measure, monitor, report and verify greenhouse gas emissions, providing data to support climate policies and sustainable development.

He said the platform would also improve transparency, strengthen climate reporting, support participation in carbon markets and boost investor confidence in the state’s climate initiatives.

Ajayi noted that climate change is already affecting public health, infrastructure, biodiversity and economic activities, making reliable data and coordinated action essential for addressing its impact.

He also acknowledged the technical support of TPHG in developing the registry and called on government agencies, the private sector, development partners, researchers and industries to utilize the platform in reducing emissions and improving environmental performance.

He said the launch marks the beginning of a new phase of climate accountability and collaboration aimed at achieving the state’s climate and sustainable development goals.
